Janet Yellen, the current U.S. Treasury Secretary, hinted at her retirement plans during the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin, Texas. When asked whether she would continue serving in her role after President Joe Biden’s term ends in January, Yellen responded by saying she is “probably done.” This statement suggests that Yellen may not be seeking another high-level government position after Biden’s term, although she left the door slightly open by adding “but… we’ll see.”
Managing U.S.-China Relations
Yellen mentioned the importance of managing the often tense relationship between the United States and China. She highlighted a potential upcoming meeting with her Chinese counterpart, Vice Premier He Lifeng, to address economic issues. Yellen emphasized the need for ongoing discussions at both the highest levels and among agency staff to prioritize and nurture the U.S.-China relationship. She expressed concern that without proper attention, tensions between the two countries could escalate.
Regarding the U.S. economy, Yellen indicated that it has experienced a “soft landing” with lower inflation. Despite a slight decline in the unemployment rate based on August job data, Yellen remains cautious about the future pace of job creation. She noted that while consumer spending remains strong and there is stability in the job market, there are potential downside risks that need to be monitored closely. Yellen expressed confidence in the resilience of the U.S. economy, describing it as “good” and “solid.”
Yellen stressed the importance of continued attention to the U.S.-China relationship in the next administration. She emphasized the need for open dialogue to address differences and prevent tensions from escalating. Yellen highlighted the work of Undersecretary Jay Shambaugh in leading a U.S.-China economic working group to address issues such as China’s excess factory production. She called for ongoing engagement between the two countries to maintain stability and cooperation.
Janet Yellen’s remarks at the Texas Tribune Festival shed light on her future plans post-Biden’s term and the critical importance of managing U.S.-China relations. As the first female to hold multiple high-level economic positions in the United States, Yellen’s insights offer valuable perspectives on economic stability and diplomatic priorities. The ongoing dialogue between the U.S. and China will require dedicated effort and attention to ensure a productive and cooperative relationship in the coming years.
