In recent news, Taiwan’s defence ministry announced that it will be engaging in discussions with the United States regarding the allocation of funding for the island. This funding is part of a $95 billion legislative package, primarily aimed at providing security assistance to Ukraine and Israel. Despite lacking formal diplomatic ties, the United States remains Taiwan’s crucial international ally and arms supplier.
Taiwan, a democratic nation, has been facing escalating military pressure from China, which claims Taiwan as part of its territory. The defence ministry of Taiwan has expressed its gratitude towards the U.S. House of Representatives for passing the package, emphasizing the unwavering support of the United States for Taiwan. The ministry is committed to enhancing combat readiness capabilities to uphold national security and peace in the Taiwan Strait.
In 2022, Taiwan has experienced delays in receiving U.S. weapons, including Stinger anti-aircraft missiles. These delays were partly due to the focus of manufacturers on supplying weapons to Ukraine amid the conflict with Russia. The shortage of crucial military equipment raises concerns about Taiwan’s ability to defend itself effectively against Chinese aggression.
Highlighting the mounting pressure faced by Taiwan, the defence ministry reported that Chinese military aircraft had crossed the sensitive median line of the Taiwan Strait multiple times in the past 24 hours. The median line, which was previously considered an unofficial border, is now routinely violated by Chinese air force patrols. China’s disregard for this boundary reflects its assertive stance towards Taiwan.
In comparison to China’s massive armed forces, Taiwan’s military capabilities are significantly inferior, especially in terms of naval and air power. China’s continuous military activities around Taiwan, including combat patrols with warships and warplanes, underscore the existing power imbalance in the region.
Taiwan’s strategic partnership with the United States is critical for maintaining security and stability in the face of growing military threats from China. The allocation of funding from the U.S. legislative package will play a crucial role in enhancing Taiwan’s defence capabilities and safeguarding its sovereignty against external aggression.
