The Impact of Increased Transaction Limits on Foreign Visitors to China

Recently, the mobile app Alipay announced that foreign visitors to China can now spend up to $2,000 a year without having to register their ID. This is a significant increase from the previous limit of $500, and it is expected to have the most impact on international tourists. The move comes as China has been making efforts to attract more foreign travelers after facing a decline due to the pandemic.

China is known for its widespread use of mobile payments, with Alipay and WeChat Pay being the two major players in the market. The increased transaction limit on Alipay reflects Beijing’s push to make it easier for foreign visitors to make daily purchases in a country where cashless transactions are the norm. However, the strict real-name verification policies have posed challenges for international tourists in using mobile pay in China.

In addition to the $2,000 annual transaction limit for ID-free users, Alipay also announced that international travelers who register their ID can now make single transactions as large as $5,000, up from $1,000 previously. The annual transaction limit for registered users has also been increased to $50,000, five times more than the previous limit. These changes follow the recent announcements from the People’s Bank of China regarding transaction limit increases.

As part of the Alipay+ program, foreign visitors to China who download Alipay or use specific mobile payment apps from overseas can now scan Alipay QR codes directly to make payments in the country. This program aims to provide more convenience and flexibility for international travelers, making it easier for them to use mobile payments during their visit to China.

While the current changes have already made it easier for foreign visitors to use Alipay in China, there is a possibility that the transaction thresholds may be raised even further in the future. The People’s Bank of China has hinted at the potential for increasing the limits beyond the current amounts, indicating a continued effort to make mobile payments more accessible to international tourists.

The increased transaction limits on Alipay are a positive development for foreign visitors to China, as it provides them with more flexibility and convenience when making payments during their stay. With the ongoing advancements in mobile payment technology and the government’s efforts to attract more international travelers, the future looks promising for cashless transactions in China.
