Nvidia-backed Synthesia Unveils AI-Generated Expressive Avatars

Nvidia-backed AI firm Synthesia has introduced a groundbreaking technology that involves AI-generated digital avatars capable of expressing human emotions through text inputs. This innovative technology is aimed at bridging the gap between the virtual world and real characters, revolutionizing the traditional video production process by eliminating the need for cameras, microphones, actors, and extensive editing.

During a demonstration, Synthesia showcased the capabilities of its “Expressive Avatars” by inputting simple text lines such as “I am happy. I am sad. I am frustrated.” The AI-generated actor in the video then responded by verbalizing the text with the corresponding emotions, showcasing the advanced emotion recognition and expression features of the technology.

Synthesia’s cutting-edge technology has already been adopted by over 55,000 businesses, including half of the Fortune 100 companies, for creating digital avatars in corporate presentations and training videos. The company, founded in 2017, received a substantial investment of $90 million from leading investors in the previous year, valuing the company at around $1 billion. Notable investors in Synthesia include Accel, Kleiner Perkins, GV, FirstMark Capital, and MMC.

In response to concerns about potential misuse of its technology for creating fake news content, Synthesia has implemented rigorous measures. The company requires publishers to become enterprise customers to access its synthetic avatar technology, with all content undergoing moderation. Additionally, Synthesia enforces a thorough “Know Your Customer” process for new clients, similar to the procedures used in the banking industry, to prevent malicious actors from creating false company profiles.

As global elections approach, Synthesia is proactively implementing safeguards to prevent the misuse of its platform by hostile actors seeking to manipulate election outcomes. The company is actively involved in the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, which aims to establish content credentials and digital “watermarking” for AI-generated content. By introducing these measures, Synthesia ensures that viewers are aware when content is created by artificial intelligence rather than by humans.
